PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
By: Pete Kambouris of Wisconsin Engraving // February 2012

Recently I was looking on Forward Wisconsin’s website. I copied a paragraph from their plastics page for you to read:

Wisconsin Prominent Leader in Plastics Industry
Wisconsin is a leader in the plastics industry nationally in terms of employment and total number of manufacturers. Thirty-six percent of all U.S. plastics manufacturing activity takes place within a 500-mile radius of Wisconsin. The significance of Wisconsin's prominence in the industry can be attributed to a business climate favorable to the growth and prosperity of business.

What struck me was 36% of all U.S. plastics manufacturing activity takes place within a 500-mile radius of Wisconsin, that’s huge. This also shows the strength our area has in our economy and also our importance for the future. We can see this number grow by our continued dedication the plastics industry and all our related trades and fields. But is this a guarantee for the future; near future yes, distant future well this is going to be the up to the youth in school and some very active programs that are going on right now. One such program is currently being run by Jeff Thielke Ed.S., National Board Certified Instructor of PLTW-Plastics-Technology Education at Germantown Kennedy Middle School. For over 10 years he has supported the plastics industry by teaching his students about it. Let’s look at his program development; he receives direct support from the Milwaukee SPE Education Foundation, the SPE Thermoforming Division, numerous Wisconsin companies who donate plastic and molds for his program, Jeff has written the Manufacturing Plastics Youth Apprenticeship Curriculum for Wisconsin and to top it off he even has other School Districts visit his plastics program. I applaud Jeff’s dedication and determination to further the plastics industry right here in Wisconsin but more so it’s for what he is doing for our future. If the interest in plastics is started with our youth then I know the future is bright.

As always, feel free to contact me directly!

Sincerely,
Pete Kambouris- SPE Milwaukee Chapter President

RESIN SELECTION BY MIKE MILLER WRAP UP

January 17, 2012

Mike MillerBy: Ray Ciezki of Sabic Innovative Plastics

The January 17th meeting was held at the Brookfield Sheraton. We had over 50 members and guests at the meeting. The speaker was Mike Miller Engineering Mgr at New Berlin Plastics. The Topic was plastic resin selections.

Mike shared with us his knowledge and experience in making plastic material selections. He went through essential material properties and helped the audience understand these properties.

The audience came away with a better understanding the methodology of looking at the essential properties and application requirements to make better material selections. Research at the beginning of the project pays off in the successful launch of a new project.

Great questions and answers during the presentation. Jeff was also available after the meeting to discuss questions in greater detail.

FUTURE CITY EVENT A HUGE SUCCESS!

By: David Leckman

I want to thank Milwaukee SPE again for their support in STEM Forward’s Future City competition last week as a Special Award judge and sponsor.

Future City is a program developed for seventh and eighth grade students to help them discover and foster interests in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). For many of these students, this is the first time for them to hear about the engineering societies and companies that you represent.

This was the 20th annual Future City competition with approximately 200 seventh and eighth grade students participating. 42 teams competed from 17 schools around Wisconsin. The first place Wisconsin team (Hyperion, from St. Mary Parish School) will compete in the National Future City Competition in Washington D.C. during National Engineers Week (Feb. 13th - 17th). They will compete against approximately 40 other regions across the U.S.

Thanks again for your sponsorship and we look forward to a successful event again next year! Next year’s event will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2013. We will be keeping the Special Award sponsorship fee at $250 per award again.

Finally, I hope to see all of you at the STEM Forward Engineer’s Week Banquet on February 16, 2012. There will be two new additions: the “Spirit of STEM” award, and a silent auction (I call the Kindle!). Click on the following link to register yourself or to have your company reserve a table. http://esmke.jobing.com/default.asp?PageID=10009385

Contest results can be found here

Thanks again,

David Leckman
