Guest Night: Sprecher Brewery Tour
Event Information Member: $35 Non-member: $40
6:15- 6:45pm: Author Martin Hintz presents "A Spirited History of Milwaukee Brews & Booze"
Location 701 W. Glendale Avenue
About the Brewery Sprecher Brewing Co. was founded in 1985 by RANDAL SPRECHER, formerly a brewing supervisor at Pabst Brewing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Through the first ten years the company grew steadily as more and more people found out about Sprecher's high quality beers and sodas.
Sprecher and other micro-breweries have revived both the distinctive quality of regional beer and old world brewing methods as well. The term "Micro-Brewery" refers to the relative size of the brewery when compared to gigantic beer production facilities of mass marketed national brands. Where these "Mega-Giants" produce from 20 million on up to 90 million barrels a year each, a "Micro-Brewery" is a considerably small operation, brewing less than 15,000 barrels a year. Although some have grown to 50,000 to 100,000 barrels a year.
Quite a difference when you consider a barrel is equivalent to 31 gallons. In that respect, the smaller Micro-Breweries such as Sprecher can focus more on its specialty "Craft Beers" with an eye on the highest quality and tradition of European style brewing.
The tour of the brewery takes you from our Giftshop to our brewhouse, through our aging cellar to our bottling line and warehouse, all the while guided by a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. The tour ends in our indoor beer tent where samples are served and questions are answered. All adults 21 and older get 4 samples of beer (chosen from up to 20 beers on tap) and a beer tasting glass to take home. All tour participants get to sample all of our available sodas to their heart's content.
About the Author Martin Hintz has written approximately one hundred books for various publishers (Lerner, Capstone, Arcadia, Scholastic, Globe Pequot, Franklin Watts, Voyageur, Trails, Big Earth and others) on various topics. These include: Celebrate the Legend: 25 Years of Milwaukee Irish Fest (Milwaukee Irish Fest, 2005); Got Murder? The Shocking Story of Wisconsin's Notorious Killers (Trails Publishing, 2007); coauthor, Wisconsin Cheese: A Cookbook and Guide to the Cheeses of Wisconsin (Globe Pequot, 2008); and Off the Beaten Path: Wisconsin (Globe Pequot Press, 1989, with subsequent reprints).
About the Book Crack open this comprehensive history of Brew City booze. And save some room for the more recent contributions of distillers and craft brewers who continue to make the city an exciting place for the thoughtful drinker.

Failure Analysis and Prevention – Plastic Parts
Location: University of Wisconsin – Stout; Menomonie, Wisconsin Date: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Seminar Cost: Free
The Madison Group, together with the University of Wisconsin – Stout, will present a seminar titled “Failure Analysis and Prevention – Plastic Parts.” This seminar will introduce the concept of plastic failure and the analytical approach for evaluating failures. The performance of plastic materials can be linked to five factors: material, design, fabrication, installation, and service. The seminar will review these factors, with a particular emphasis on molding, and explain how they relate to failure. The critical concept of ductile-to-brittle transition will also be covered. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the factors responsible for brittle fracture in a normally ductile plastic material. Additionally, attendees will discover how structural and processing simulation can be incorporated at any stage of the design process to help prevent or resolve any quality or performance issues. The seminar will highlight key issues in plastics and plastic part design and show how these concepts have been used to solve real-life problems.
The seminar is an educational outreach between The Madison Group and the UW-Stout SPE Student Chapter.
